Rauschenberg

Kimmelman, M (2008, May 13) Robert Rauschenberg, Titan of American Art, Is Dead at 82. The New York Times

His work always inspired me; he taught that you don't need to have the finest canvases or the best paints, just scraps that you pick up along the way.

But look on the bright side, the first 100 ticket holders got free glue.

Priorities

(2008, May 3) "Berwyn's 'Spindle' dismantled late Friday" The Chicago Tribune

Link here

It's events like this that make me feel queasy. So it might not have been the most iconic work in the country's history, but it still defined part of Berwyn's identity. Yesterday while everyone slept, a crew dismantled it so a Walgreens could be built. In the words of Wayne Campbell, whose movie launched the spindle to fame, "sha, as if..." So that's great. Berwyn gets a third Walgreens at the cost of a priceless work of public art. I doubt anyone will ever drive past the Walgreens, slow down, take a picture and say "oh that's a totally sweet Walgreens." I guess it could happen?

plagiarism

So to be clear, if I plagiarize, cheat, or steal in medical school, I pretty much get kicked out. So why then do my professors feel justified to plagiarize and steal content of the web without citing and source and present it to us? Our Immunology professor not only cannibalized other staff members' presentations to make his, but then lifted whole passages verbatim from this online textbook from U Wisconsin.

Suddenly it's clear why they didn't want us to record their lectures, because then they wouldn't have the luxury of stealing other people's material. Then they might actually have to find references, cite sources, and play by the rules. For God's sake, here I'm supposed to be learning about things like antibiotics and bacteria to one day apply to the well being of patients and I might screw it up because some jackass decided to copy and paste.

If I have to be held to an honor code, then so should the faculty.

Family

The presidential candidates' websites are interesting if you have hours to kill:

John McCain
Hillary Clinton Barack Obama

Both Clinton and McCain have a singular photo of themselves with the open mouth smile, you know, that look that says "I'm trying really hard to be spontaneous" when we all know that it took a team of photographers to get the right shot. Obama is the only candidate that puts a picture of himself with his family as the greeting image. I guess this comes as no surprise. Hillary most likely needs to pretend like Bill doesn't exist to avoid any scandal/controversy/comparison and McCain's wife looks like she's called "kitty" at cocktail parties. Moreover, I bet McCain doesn't want his kids in a picture because the majority of American's would then get a sense for how old this guy really is. Shit man, I don't even have pennies as old as him.

This post is labeled "procrastinating" and "politics" and now that I think about it, the two are really inseparable.
